"Why I Love Accelerated Reader"
Katharine Beckett, associate director of English at the Outwood Grange Academies Trust, discusses the impact of Renaissance’s reading practice and assessment solutions.
With Accelerated Reader, a student reads a book, takes an online quiz, and gets immediate feedback. Students respond to regular feedback and are motivated to improve their reading skills.
Personalised goals help students stay focused on what matters most for reading growth—and help you monitor their progress and provide feedback to keep students on track.
Individual reading recommendations use students’ interests and reading levels to suggest “just-right” titles—or students can self-select from over 40,000 choices!
Reading for pleasure transforms into high-quality reading practice. Reading quizzes monitor comprehension, while literacy skills and vocabulary quizzes extend student learning and build skills mastery.
A comprehensive set of reports reveals how much a student has been reading, at what level of complexity, and how well they have understood what they have read.
We are delighted with the Accelerated Reader and Star Reading programmes. Reading unlocks so many opportunities for children, and since bringing in AR, our children have developed a love of reading and are keen to take quizzes. Our teachers speak positively about it, and OFSTED highlighted how well it contributes to reading overall within the school.
Accelerated Reader allowed Godolphin students to find their voice in their reading preferences. Before, there was a stigma around reading in schools that children hadn’t had access to books they wanted. Now students can access various texts within their ZPD and take ownership of their preferences to succeed.
Encourage students to find something to read! Accelerated Reader has quizzes on over 40,000 books, ensuring students never run out of choices.
This is the best part! Students get to read a book of their choosing. Students can read in class, at home, or out and about in the community.
Once they finish a book, students take a short quiz on what they’ve read. Each quiz is written to ensure students have read the entire book.
You gain instant insight into students’ quiz results. Use that data to set goals, monitor students’ continued progress, and personalise lesson plans.
Independent research links Accelerated Reader to academic success and positive attitudes towards reading.
According to an independent “study by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) and Durham University, Accelerated Reader produces “particularly positive effects. ”
“The internet-based programme increased pupils’ reading age. “The effect on low-income pupils, three additional months in just 22 weeks, was even greater, with their reading age improving by five additional months simultaneously.”
Accelerated Reader and Young People’s Reading is an independent report by Dr Christina Clark of the National Literacy Trust (NLT).
“Children and young people who use Accelerated Reader tend to enjoy reading more, do it more often and think more positively about reading than their peers who do not use Accelerated Reader. They are also likelier to see a link between reading and their successes.”
With Star Reading and myON by Renaissance, Accelerated Reader forms a complete reading practice and assessment solution for students of all ages and abilities.

We really value Accelerated Reader; reading has been our absolute priority here, as it should be in every school. We have children that come into our school, a lot of them with quite a low-level language acquisition, and we primarily use AR to support children who graduate from our phonics scheme
