'Trends in Student Outcome Measures' Report 2024

At Renaissance, we’re committed to helping pupils achieve their full potential. That’s why we’re excited to share the findings from our new research study, which demonstrates the transformative impact of Accelerated Reader (AR) on pupils’ reading abilities and performance.

Key insights from our study:

Improvement

Pupils using AR experienced significantly higher annual improvement than those who did not use the programme.

Primary Progression

Primary school pupils were more likely to be on track for meeting Key Stage 2 assessment benchmarks.

Secondary Success

Secondary students using AR experienced significantly higher annual improvement in their reading abilities and academic performance than those who did not use the programme.

Preparation

The better AR was implemented, the more students were prepared for national curriculum tests. Schools following AR best practice substantially improved students’ reading abilities and academic performance.

What is best practice?

Accelerated Reader best practices include reading for at least 15 minutes daily, achieving an average of 85% correct on quizzes, and staying within the recommended reading range. To discuss how we can help you maximise the impact of AR in your school, speak with one of our consultants.

Key findings for Primary, Secondary, and Struggling Readers

Primary

From the latest research, primary students using Accelerated Reader are more likely to be on track to meet the KS2 assessment benchmark. They show remarkable improvement in their reading skills, with 91% of students following ‘Best Practice Accelerated Reader’ at or above the KS2 benchmark compared to only 64% of non-Accelerated Reader students.

This is set against the Department for Education’s provisional statistics for 2024, which show slight improvements in KS2 reading, writing and maths standards, though they remain below pre-pandemic levels.

SGP
KS2

Primary students who used AR progressed more than those who did not, and better AR implementation was associated with even more growth. Disadvantaged

Secondary

When Year 7 students transition from primary to secondary school, some may struggle, especially those who didn’t meet the expected standards in their Key Stage 2 SATs.

In the latest research, students who began Year 7 below the Working At/Above level and used AR saw remarkable improvements by the end of the school year.

Moreover, students likely to receive Year 7 catch-up funding and using AR were more likely to meet the Key Stage benchmarks

Secondary

Secondary students make 13% more progress using AR best practice than those who don’t.

Struggling Readers

Struggling readers also make accelerated progress in their reading compared to their peers through AR best practice, and disadvantaged students who used AR were more likely to be prepared for Key Stage exams at primary.

Nearly twice as many struggling readers at primary level were better prepared for their KS2 SATs by using AR best practice.

AR

Struggling readers make accelerated progress in their reading compared to their peers through using AR best practice.

Within one year of introducing AR, we improved our percentage of pupils meeting the expected reading standard from 40% to 70% at KS2.

Having seen the positive impact AR can have at another school, I knew this meant utilising the abundance of data and insight AR and Star Reading provide.

How does Accelerated Reader work?

1. Choose

Encourage students to find something to read! Accelerated Reader has quizzes on over 40,000 books, ensuring students never run out of choices.

2. Read

This is the best part! Students get to read a book of their choosing. Students can read in class, at home, or out and about in the community.

3. Quiz

Once they finish a book, students take a short quiz on what they’ve read. Each quiz is written to ensure students have read the entire book.

4. Analyse

You gain instant insight into students’ quiz results. Use that data to set goals, monitor students’ continued progress, and personalise lesson plans.
