What schools say

Trusted by schools to improve literacy outcomes

NGRT hasn't just helped us assess reading — it's helped us transform it. The reports are incredibly detailed and easy to use — it saves hours of teacher time.

Accelerated Reader, Star Reading and myON have been tremendous resources in helping our students dramatically increase their reading time.

Academically, our schools consistently exceed the national average in the reading sections of their GCSE English papers – but the benefit of using AR extends much further than test scores.

Questions schools and school groups often ask

Find quick answers to common questions about literacy assessment and reading practice, including implementation, training and support, so you can make an informed decision with confidence.

How can schools identify each learner’s literacy needs?

Schools can identify reading ability, strengths and areas for development with Star Reading or NGRT. They can use these tools to assess reading performance and spot learners who may need additional support. Both assessments provide valuable insights that help teachers understand learner needs, inform intervention planning and monitor progress over time. Combined with reading practice and comprehension data from Accelerated Reader, teachers understand how students are applying those skills in practice, making it easier to target support and track improvement.

What is the difference between Star Reading, NGRT, Accelerated Reader and myON?

Star Reading and NGRT are standardised reading assessments that help schools identify literacy needs and monitor progress. Accelerated Reader develops reading practice, comprehension and engagement through quizzes and progress monitoring, while myON provides access to thousands of digital books that encourage independent reading and reading for pleasure. Together, they support different parts of a school’s literacy strategy.

Do schools need both Star Reading and NGRT?

No. Schools typically choose either Star Reading or NGRT depending on their assessment requirements. Both can help identify learner needs, monitor progress and inform intervention planning. Either assessment can be used alongside Accelerated Reader and myON as part of a broader literacy approach, however, currently Star Reading is integrated with Accelerated Reader whereas NGRT needs to be manually added.

Can schools use Star Reading, NGRT, Accelerated Reader or myON on their own?

Schools can start with Star Reading, New Group Reading Test (NGRT) or myON individually, depending on their literacy priorities. Some schools focus first on assessment to pinpoint learner needs, while others prioritise reading practice and engagement. Accelerated Reader is purchased alongside Star Reading in the UK, enabling schools to combine reading assessment with purposeful reading practice and progress monitoring. Many schools choose to combine assessment and reading practice solutions over time to create a more complete literacy strategy that strengthen identification, intervention and ongoing progress monitoring.

How can schools encourage reading engagement and reading for pleasure?

Building reading engagement starts with giving learners access to books they can read successfully and enjoy. Accelerated Reader helps motivate students through personalised reading practice and comprehension quizzes, while myON expands access to a wide range of digital texts that encourage independent reading both in and beyond the classroom.

How quickly can schools get started with Star reading, NGRT, Accelerated Reader, and myON?

Renaissance provides structured onboarding support and ongoing training to guide schools to implement their chosen solutions from the start of the school year. Schools can begin with one product and expand their use over time, making it straightforward to build a more complete assessment approach at a pace that suits their staff and budget.

Is Renaissance suitable for both primary and secondary schools?

Yes. Renaissance literacy solutions are used across both primary and secondary settings. Schools use them to support reading assessment, intervention, reading practice and literacy development at different stages of a learner’s journey, from building foundational reading skills to helping older students with continued reading growth and engagement.
